Today in History: Lincoln Wrote This Scathing Letter to Gen. George G. Meade, July 14, 1863

The Battle of Gettysburg had finally ended. Gen. Robert E. Lee’s battered army limped southward. Gen. George G. Meade, however, didn't go after him to finish the job, much to Lincoln’s chagrin. He believed that the general should pursue Lee and attack him while he's retreating. Lincoln penned the letter below chastising Gen. Meade for his inaction. But after writing it, Lincoln had second thoughts and decided not to send the letter to Meade.
